"I was being pulled around by the nose every place, and I found out the common denominator to the whole thing was I was always going, 'Well, what next? I'll do something else.' I was bored. And that's what it is. The French have a word for it—it's called ennui, and so I wrote a song about it called the Grand Ennui, and it just has to do with getting stuck in a place where you're really hung behind stuff. You know, a lot of junk and things. I had a lot of cars and I had airplanes and stuff like that, and, boy, it's really a very funny place to be in. So, this is a song that was like the beginning of the awakening through that period. And in which Red takes a solo that will curl your little toes, boy."
